House

10th House

Your public face and legacy, career, reputation, and the direction your life visibly takes.

The 10th house is anchored by the Midheaven, the chart's highest point, and describes public life: career, reputation, and the direction a life visibly takes in front of other people.

It's an angular house, the most public position in the wheel, and sits opposite the 4th house, the most private, together describing the full range between the home nobody sees and the reputation everybody does.

The 10th house traditionally governs career and public vocation, authority, and one's standing in the world, and, in older conventions, the parent associated with discipline and public reputation rather than private nurture. Anchored by the Midheaven, the chart's highest point, it describes whatever about a life becomes visible and judged by people who were never given its private context.

Reputation, in that sense, functions almost like a second identity, built collaboratively by everyone who's ever formed an opinion, one that can diverge sharply from how a person experiences themselves privately. Opposite the 4th house, the 10th house marks the public half of a lifelong balance: the 4th is where a person is simply themselves, unwitnessed, while the 10th is where that same person becomes a public fact, summarized and remembered by whatever became visible.
